Built in 1886 to serve the rapidly growing southern part of Sprowston. The church and the adjacent vicarage were paid for by the Gurney family, who lived at Sprowston Manor.

The main local industry was brick-making. The pub on the opposite side of the Wroxham Road roundabout is The Brickmakers. It is not surprising therefore that the church is built entirely of brick.

In 1979 a new church centre was built on the north side of the church.

In 1986 the church was re-ordered when the joists supporting the floor were found to be rotten.
